A ten-year-old boy from Saline is feeling just champion after lifting a Scottish karting title.

Thomas Jackson has won the A-Plate Championship, a competition that is held over four tracks across the country, to top his division.

His mum Susan said: “He’s done amazing. He even won the competition by 28 points when last year it was much tighter than that with only a few points in it between the top two. We’re all so proud of him.

“Every waking minute of his life is about racing. When he has a rare weekend off, he gets so lost.

"He’s got a chair with a steering wheel at home, and he commentates over himself, it’s quite cute. I can’t express how proud we are off him that he won the A-Plate.”

The earlier rounds of the competition meant Thomas and his family travelled all around Scotland and he raced in challenging weather conditions.

From Golspie in the Highlands to Boyndie in Aberdeenshire, closer to home at Crail and then off to Larkhall, they clocked up the miles as he picked up the wins.

Thomas has competed in his Honda Cadet kart since he was 8, having got behind the wheel two years before at what is known as Bambino level.

Susan said: “He started off watching Formula 1 on YouTube and now it’s become our whole lives.

"Lewis Hamilton and most of the other racers started off with that so he wanted to start. He used to just do wee races once a month but now it’s a full-blown family commitment every weekend.”

Susan continued: “His dad, Andrew, has been brilliant with him as well, he fixes his kart and makes all the necessary changes before each race or even in between laps. It’s so important to make sure that nothing goes wrong.

“It’s a lot of travelling and quite expensive to make it to all these competitions so the fact that he’s got the reward for all of this makes it so worth it.

"He puts so much effort into it as well, he’s missed friends’ birthdays at the weekends and everything. It’s amazing to see how committed he is at such a young age.”

Thomas seems to be at his most comfortable when he’s racing.

Susan said: “He does struggle a wee bit in school, he can be quite shy and nervous whereas as soon as he is in the kart he’s cool as a cucumber.

"He has moments where he isn’t in top form but he’s really good for his age. He rarely gets flustered.”

Thomas attends Saline Primary and Susan added: “They've been really helpful. He was featured in an assembly celebrating wider achievements and when he was involved in the Ultimate Karting Championship, which was live streamed on YouTube, the school let the kids watch that.

"Sometimes he needs to be let away from school earlier on a Friday and they cater for that too.”

Susan thanked those who have supported Thomas on his journey so far: “Big thanks to Ryan at Cannon Motorsport as they have supported us so much over the past two years.

"The family have been brilliant as well, his grandparents come and support him every race and they’re his biggest fans.”

Thomas has an older sister Millie, 14, younger brother Ross who is 6, and little sister Lottie who is 3.

Ross has just started go-karting at bambino level so there could be another champion in the family soon enough.

Thomas has already got his sights set on an even bigger goal.

Susan said: “He wants to do the British next year. He wants to win it at some level whether it’s juniors or intermediates.

"It’s such a massive commitment for me and his dad though as the races take place all over the country from the bottom of the UK to the top.

"But first he’s got another two championships coming up over the next two weekends that he is hoping to win.”
