A RISING West Fife star is set to play in a prestigious World Snooker Tour (WST) event for a second time after cueing up for a shot at UK Championship qualifying.

Jack Borwick, who is a pupil at Queen Anne High School, has been invited to participate in the BetVictor Shoot Out competition, which heads to Swansea next month.

A ranking event on the WST, its unique format makes it one of the sport's most dramatic tournaments, with players battling against the clock as well as their opponent.

Matches last for a maximum of 10 minutes, with a shot clock of 15 seconds for the first five, and 10 seconds for the last, whilst crowd interaction with the players is encouraged.

Talented Jack has already had a taste of it, having been one of six promising young amateur players that were given the opportunity to play at January's event in Leicester, which he said was one of the highlights of a richly successful 2023.

That gave the Cairneyhill 16-year-old the chance to rub shoulders with some of the game's top players, including ex-world champions Ken Doherty and Shaun Murphy, legendary six-time World Championship finalist, Jimmy White, and Scot Steven Maguire.

On that occasion, Jack lost out to Ali Carter, but it was still a great experience.

He said: "It was only 10 minutes, so you never got to experience a full, proper game. It's hard because before you know it, time was up, but it was good.

"Hopefully, I'll be able to adjust to it a bit better next time."

Jack will head to the Shoot Out on the back of taking part in qualifying for the UK Championship - one of snooker's 'triple crown' events, alongside the World Championship and the Masters - where he was drawn against Martin O'Donnell.

In a best of 11 frames contest, Jack found himself two frames up before losing five in a row, but then he won two back prior to a stoppage in play, after which his opponent clinched the match 6-4.

So next up now for Jack is the Shoot Out, from December 6 to 9, followed by the BetVictor Scottish Open, which will be held at Edinburgh's Meadowbank Sports Centre from December 11 to 17. He received a wildcard entry for the Open due to his ranking and victory earlier this year in the Scottish national under-18 championship.

This year has also seen him win the under-16 EBSA (European Billiards and Snooker Association) European Snooker Championship 2023 in Malta, secure third place in the main Scottish tour last season, and finish the season as the highest under-21 player.
