PARS boss James McPake has said he hopes his squad won't pick up any further knocks when they close out an injury-hit campaign tomorrow evening.

But he is still looking for a good performance from his players to see out their Championship campaign when they travel to play Ayr United at Somerset Park.

The sixth-placed Pars, one place and one point above their opponents, ended any fears they could still finish second bottom, and in the relegation play-off spot, by earning a draw with struggling Inverness Caledonian Thistle on Saturday.

It's between the ninth-placed Highlanders, who host Greenock Morton, who sit fifth and a point above Dunfermline, and Queen's Park, who sit eighth and a point clear going into their encounter with Airdrieonians, to see who will join Hamilton Academical, Alloa Athletic and Montrose in the Championship play-offs.

Other than determining final league placings, it's a pressure-free 90 minutes ahead for both Athletic and the Honest Men, but McPake still wants his players to put on a show - and avoid being taken to the treatment room.

"Performance I think," was the manager's reply when asked what his priority from the game was.

"That's what we've stressed to the players. We want to go down, we want a good performance. The one thing I would like to get out of it is no injuries, but you're never guaranteed with that.

"Over the course of the season, that's been the recurring theme, far too often. In too many games and too many training sessions we're coming off and cursing another injury.

"If we get down and perform well, and pick up no injuries, I'll be happy on Friday night.

"It's just with this season and you're at that point that the players, in particular, Matty Todd, Kyle Benedictus, Kane Ritchie-Hosler, the ones that had long-term injuries, (Alex) Jakubiak had to a degree had that, Breeny (Rhys Breen), although Breeny and Jakubiak haven't had the game time, but I feel a wee bit for Bene, Matty Todd and Kane where, they came back, and we rolled them out every time we could.

"We were going Saturday Tuesday, Saturday Tuesday, and I think that catches up with you. I think particularly you could see it with Bene and Matty. Kane's hit a wee bit of a lull as well so, for them, I don't think the break can come quick enough if I'm honest."

McPake received good news this week in that Ewan Otoo does not need surgery on a knee problem, and revealed that Aaron Comrie is back training after injury, whilst Craig Wighton is set to be involved at Somerset.

"Aaron Comrie's back on the pitch. It probably came a week too early for Aaron or he'd have been involved," he added.

"I think he's a bit disappointed but it's great for us that we'll have Aaron for the first day of pre-season.

"Ewan got good news from the surgeon in Glasgow. There's no surgery required; he just needs to manage the knee. He should be back for the first day of pre-season.

"Wighty will be involved tomorrow. To be fair, he's trained brilliantly. He's probably coming back wishing that the season had another few weeks to go because he's built himself up.

"But, again, I think just get him involved tomorrow, then he'll have some down time, and then he'll have his off-season programme to come back hitting the ground running come pre-season.

"It's important that, after an injury, getting that pre-season into you. There's a few that certainly need it, but we've got a game to take care of first."
