ONE of Dunfermline Cycling Club's biggest events of the year takes place this weekend but they are aiming to encourage more people to pedal into social rides with them.

On Sunday, they will host their Tour of the Kingdom Cycle Sportive, which will begin and end in Pittencrieff Park, with those taking part having the choice of taking in a route of either 58 or 92 miles.

It is set to attract more than 100 cyclists but, if taking on such distances seems daunting for some, they have alternatives to suit anyone who wants to get on their bike with like-minded people.

The club, one of Scotland's longest-established following its formation in 1935, offer weekly social rides, including a 'bun run' on a Saturday and Sunday.

Every fortnight they have also been conducting 'a step-up to bun run' ride, which is at a more gentle pace.

Club member, Stuart Delgarno, explained: "Whereas a bun run would average about 16mph, which people might find a bit daunting, the step up run averages between 12 and 14mph, depending on who's there on the day.

"We run a no drop policy, so nobody gets left behind. This misconception that they have to go super-duper fast, it's not like that at all.

"The great thing about that ride is there's a cafe stop as well. The social side of it is really good as well.

"People perhaps have this misconception that they have to be this super-duper cyclist, all clad up with the latest full rig of lycra to be able to join the cycling club, but it's not like that at all."

Dunfermline Cycling Club caters for all cycling disciplines and, each year, host four major events - the Knockhill Mountain TT, the Jack Murray Road Race, the Eileen Roe Shield Women's Road Race, and the sportive.

The tour of the Kingdom this year will take riders on a route that was partly used for the men's elite road race during last year's UCI World Cycling Championships, taking in the coast towards Culross.

With capacity for 250 entrants, anyone wishing to take part can enter on the day, which costs £30.

Times recorded via electronic time keeping, refreshment stops, photographs and a finishers medal are included in the price and, for further information, visit the club's website at www.dunfermlinecc.com, or find them on Facebook.
