ATHLETIC have completed a deal to sign former St Johnstone double cup winner David Wotherspoon.

The 34-year-old, who has been training with the Pars, has signed a one-year contract to become James McPake's third summer signing.

Canada international Wotherspoon, who ended last season with Championship title winners, Dundee United, has followed Chris Kane - a former team-mate in Perth - and Kieran Ngwenya in arriving at KDM Group East End Park.

The Perth-born attacking midfielder began his senior career with Hibernian, where he was a team-mate of McPake, before moving to boyhood heroes Saints in 2013.

During a memorable decade at McDiarmid Park, he helped the club win their first major honour - the Scottish Cup - in 2014, alongside current Pars star, Michael O'Halloran, and assistant manager, Dave Mackay, who captained the side.

Wotherspoon went on to become the most decorated player in St Johnstone's history when he helped them to Scottish Cup and League Cup glory in the 2020/21 season, achieved under the charge of former Pars coach, Callum Davidson, and made more than 350 appearances for them.

Upon the expiry of his contract last year, he departed Saints, having become their first player to feature at a World Cup when he played 19 minutes for Canada at the 2022 tournament in Qatar, and spent much of last pre-season training with Dunfermline.

However, in October, he signed for their Championship rivals, Inverness Caledonian Thistle, until January, for whom he played 11 times, scoring four goals, in all competitions.

After leaving the Highlanders at the end of his short-term contract, Wotherspoon moved on to Dundee United, and made his debut for Jim Goodwin's side in a scoreless draw with Athletic at Tannadice.

He played a further eight times for the Tangerines to help them secure the title and promotion to the Premiership, but left after his short-term six month contract ended, allowing McPake and Dunfermline to make their move.
