DUNFERMLINE and Carnegie Cricket Club's first XI had a mixed weekend in their bid to make a push towards the promotion places in East of Scotland Cricket Association Division Two.

The McKane Park team entertained Kelso, who are also in the mix to try and move up to Division One, on Saturday, and lowly Carlton third XI on Sunday.

They produced a fine win in their first encounter, but a poor battling performance cost them in the second as they fell to defeat.

Due to a festival in the Borders town, the Kelso match started earlier, at noon, which helped to beat the rain as Dunfermline and Carnegie posted an important victory.

The hosts put together a good total of 188 runs in their 40 overs, with Vasu Reddy scoring heavily with 57, whilst George Olney's unbeaten 38 took them to a challenging tally.

Dunfermline and Carnegie skipper, Dan Styer, struck early in the Kelso reply, and went on to collect five wickets, as the visitors' innings collapsed.

Dunfermline and Carnegie (20) 188 for 8, V Reddy 67, G Olney 38, J Connelly 2 for 19, G Davidson 2 for 42.

Kelso (4) 63, S Styer 5 for 20, A Xavier 2 for 5, G Olney 2 for 17.

The following day, a win for Dunfermline and Carnegie would have given them an opportunity to edge into the promotion race, but the loss of their last seven wickets for 30 wickets proved significant.

Carlton took first use of the track and an aggressive knock by Shrevas Tekale gave them a good start, but a fine spell by Asmat Khan saw wickets fall.

The visitors kept accumulating runs, but the home attack kept them in check, and they ended up being all out for 128.

After the loss of two early wickets, David Miller and Bruce Callan repaired the damage and took Dunfermline and Carnegie back into the game with a 40 run partnership.

At 62 for three, they were very much in the picture, but a series of poor shots saw them collapse to defeat.

Carlton third XI (20) 128, S Tekale 39, C Moore 27, A Khan 3 for 19, A Xavier 3 for 26, D Styer 2 for 26.

Dunfermline and Carnegie (7) 94, B Callan 28, D Miller 24, R Ledingham 5 for 14, S Tekale 3 for 32.

In divisions five and eight, Dunfermline and Carnegie's second and third XI saw their matches at Melrose, and Marchmont fourth XI respectively, abandoned due to heavy rain.

Meanwhile, Broomhall got back into Strathmore and Perthshire Union Second Division action, at Victory Park on Saturday, but found Meigle second XI tough opposition.

On batting first Meigle scored at a good rate and posted a challenging target of 186.

Broomhall lost early wickets and never really got going, although Euan Breen put together a good knock of 38, and they lost by 104 runs.

Meigle second XI (20) 186 for 5, J Morrison 70, F Barron 46, S Lucas 2 for 27.

Broomhall (4) 82, E Breen 38 not out, I Stewart 5 for 26, L Chathuranga 2 for 3.
