Thornton Hibs 3 Inverkeithing Hillfield Swifts 0

THE SWIFTS saw their defence of the East of Scotland Qualifying Cup end at the first hurdle against Thornton Hibs on Wednesday evening.

In April, the club's senior team picked up their first trophy since its formation in 2018 when they defeated Dunbar United 2-1, and were handed an away tie to their East of Scotland League, First Division rivals.

Jason McCrindle's Swifts were relegated from the Premier Division last season, despite their historic cup glory, and opened the new campaign with a 1-1 draw at home to Arniston Rangers on Saturday.

He anticipated a tough match at Memorial Park but his team had opportunities, with Adam Mansouri and Aaron Wood, the latter of whom opened the scoring in last season's final, both denied by home keeper, Craig Doctor.

Swifts fell behind in the 26th minute when Andy McCallion netted from Garry Thomson's assist, who doubled the advantage for Craig Gilbert's side nine minutes after half-time.

An own goal just after the hour mark sealed the visitors' fate as Thornton progressed to the third round.

They join Crossgates Primrose, who were 2-0 winners over Edinburgh South on Tuesday evening, and Oakley United, who enjoyed an impressive 3-1 successive over Premier Division Dunipace after extra time, in progressing from round two.

Tomorrow the Swifts return to East of Scotland League First Division action with an away match at Camelon Juniors.
