Crossgates Primrose 2 Leith Athletic 1, East of Scotland League, First Division

CROSSGATES PRIMROSE boss Alan Campbell praised his new-look side for making it two successive wins in less than a week.

The Humbug Park outfit, who lost their opening league fixture at Newtongrange Star, recorded a win over Leith Athletic on Saturday after progressing to the third round of the East of Scotland Qualifying Cup against Edinburgh South last Tuesday.

Scott Hynd netted his third goal in as many matches to put the hosts ahead after 18 minutes against the visitors from the capital, with Craig Henderson doubling their advantage five minutes before the break.

Although Josh Lamond pulled one back with four minutes to go, Primrose held out for their first three points of the First Division season, and Campbell commented: "After all the work we've done during pre-season, I thought that the Newtongrange result was a bit of a blip.

"It's been good to come back strongly. Last week, we got through in the cup comfortably, and on Saturday, it was good to get our first three points in the league. It was a good performance.

"On Saturday we started the game really well. In the first half, we were well on top and scored two really good goals. We spoke at half-time and said to keep our feet on the pedal and go and kill the game off. We had a couple of chances early in the second half to kill it off, but we didn't.

"You can't expect to dominate for the full 90 minutes in this league, with the teams that are in it, so I was pleased we saw it out."

He added: "We've bounced back really quickly. We're trying to make Crossgates a difficult place to come to, and in our first two home games, that's two wins. We'll be looking to continue that.

"We move on to Heriot-Watt this Saturday, which is a different type of fixture, so we'll prepare for that.

"If we get that level of performance we had for the first hour on Saturday, we'll be a tough team to beat."

Camelon Juniors 4 Inverkeithing Hillfield Swifts 0, East of Scotland League, First Division

SWIFTS suffered a second successive defeat in league and cup at Camelon on Saturday as they await their first victory of the season.

Jason McCrindle's men opened their First Division campaign with a draw against Arniston Rangers but, last Wednesday, saw their defence of the East of Scotland Qualifying Cup end at the first hurdle.

After winning the trophy - the first in the history of Swifts' senior side, which was formed in 2018 - in April, they travelled to First Division rivals, Thornton Hibs, but fell to a 3-0 defeat.

Andy McCallion and Garry Thomson put the hosts two goals ahead, before an own goal just after the hour mark sent Inverkeithing out of the competition.

On Saturday, they visited Camelon - managed by former Dunfermline Athletic star, Allan Moore - in the league, but were on the end of a heavy defeat.

Sean Burns and Graham Taylor put the Mariners two goals up at the break, which Zander Miller and Scott Sinclair added to, sealing the home side's victory.

Swifts last night (Wednesday) were due to travel to Kinnoull in their latest league fixture.

Bathgate Thistle 0 Oakley United 1, East of Scotland League, Second Division

OAKLEY UNITED secured their first win of the league season on Saturday and continued their unbeaten start with a six-goal thriller on Tuesday evening.

Peter Goldie's team drew 2-2 with Kennoway Star Hearts in their opener, before impressively seeing off Premier Division Dunipace, after extra time, in the East of Scotland Qualifying Cup last midweek.

They travelled to Bathgate Thistle - 4-3 winners at Vale of Leithen in their first fixture of the season - at the weekend, and returned home to West Fife with all three points.

Ryan Cowie's goal before half-time proved decisive for the O's, and Goldie said: "Saturday was a good performance overall from us.

"First half we created some good chances and, if it hadn't been for poor decision making and some great saves from the Bathgate goalkeeper, the result could have been more comfortable for us.

"The boys were solid defensively in the second half and we were happy to come away with the three points, away from home, and with a clean sheet."

On Tuesday, Oakley were back in action, entertaining Armadale Thistle at Blairwood Park, and the teams shared the points after an entertaining 3-3 draw.

The visitors, who ended with 10 men, led at the break but, in an action-packed second period, five more goals - including an own goal in Oakley's favour, adding to efforts from Robbie Breeze and Yanni Iliopoulos, saw the contest end all-square.

Saturday's fixtures (kick-offs 2.30pm unless stated): East of Scotland League, First Division: Inverkeithing Hillfield Swifts v Blackburn United, Heriot-Watt University v Crossgates Primrose (3pm). Alex Jack Cup, first round: Ormiston Primrose v Oakley United.
