A STAR quartet of talented athletes with Pitreavie AAC have smashed a national record by seven seconds.

Mia Fairweather, Esme Deacon, Isla Gourley and Millie Ovens recently set a new best in the under-15 girls distance medley relay at the Scottish National Track Relay Championships.

Having each ran in 4x100 metre relay events just an hour earlier - with Esme and Mia winning a silver medal as part of the club's 'A' squad - they returned to the track, at Ayr's Riverside Sports Arena, after little recovery time before posting a new Scottish best time.

The medley relay saw the athletes complete legs of 300m, 800m, 200m and 600m, and they were led by experienced sprinter Mia.

In her first year as an under-15 athlete, she landed the Scottish Schools Championships age group title over the 300m distance last year, and she opened their race before passing the baton to Millie.

In her first year in competitive athletics as an 800m runner, she finished fourth at the Scottish Schools and won her first championship medal at the Scottish East District Championships, posting a personal best of two minutes and 17.97 seconds.

Millie, who is ranked eighth in Scotland, paced her run brilliantly before handing on to Esme to run the 200m leg.

Throughout this season, she has won gold in both the 100m and 200m at the East District Championships in Grangemouth, in addition to the Scottish Schools title over the former distance.

Esme, who also set a PB of 25.71 in 200m, is ranked second in Scotland in the under-15 girls age group, and she stormed around the bend to leave her competitors trailing.

She passed the baton on to Isla for the final leg, who has proven you can balance other sports with athletics, as she plays football in Edinburgh whilst running for Pitreavie.

Ranked fourth in Scotland over 800m at her age group, Isla showed grit and determination to lead her team home, crossing the line in a total time of 5:07.32 to take the national title, as well as a new Scottish record.

Meanwhile, Pitreavie's annual road race is set to attract more than 400 participants this weekend.

The Forth Road Bridge 10k event is on Sunday, which will take the competing runners across the river from North Queensferry before returning to the finish.

Entries for the races, which began at 10.30am, are closed.
