A DUNFERMLINE Water Polo Club star has been selected to play for Great Britain.
Zara Christie is one of 13 players who have been picked in the squad for the Under-19 Women’s European Water Polo Championships, which will be held in the Croatian capital, Zagreb.
The teenager is one of five members from GB's under-17 squad that finished 13th at the European Championship 12 months ago that have been chosen to take part in the event, which begins on Saturday August 24.
Last year, Zara successfully came through a series of trials to take her place in the squad for the competition, which was held in Türkiye, having previously made GB's junior girls squad.
In addition to starring at the under-17 European Championships, Zara was subsequently selected for GB's under-19 squad to play in a senior Women's EU Nations Cup competition, helping them to third place, and was named as the Junior Water Polo Player of the Year at Scottish Swimming's annual awards.
Zara and her GB team-mates have been drawn in Group D of the competition, where they'll open with a match against Germany on the opening day.
That is the first of two matches on the first day, with the second coming against Bulgaria, before they face Malta the following day, and Türkiye on Tuesday August 27.
If GB place in the top two in their section, they then have an opportunity to move to the latter stages of the tournament, whilst finishing third or below would put them into the 13-16th place play-offs.
In preparation for Croatia, the squad recently completed a two-week training camp in Greece, where they took on a number of international and top club sides, including Greece under-19s, who placed third at the European Championships two years ago, Israel, the USA and Ethnikos.
To help meet the costs of the trip - water polo is almost entirely self-funded - a gofundme page has been set up, and can be accessed here.
