A WEST FIFE bowling club are preparing to mark their centenary with a weekend of celebratory events.

The first jack that was thrown to open the green at Headwell Bowling Club took place on September 6 1924, and on Friday, they are repeating the ceremony on the 100-year anniversary.

All living members who have been president, champion, or brought honours to the club by winning external competitions, have been invited to the event, which will also include an evening's entertainment.

Since its formation, Headwell, who are based in Shamrock Street, Dunfermline, have gone on to achieve success both locally and nationally, and opened its indoor stadium facility in September 1977.

Following the throwing of the jack on the green, their longest serving ladies member, Margaret Goodwin, will unveil a plaque to members past and present, which has been created with support from the Carnegie Dunfermline Trust.

In addition to tomorrow evening's events, Saturday will see a total of 48 players come together for a friendly game, replicating the the first original match at the club, featuring guests from Dunfermline, Dunfermline Northern, Nethertown and Dunfermline West End (Baldridgeburn) bowling clubs.

Alistair Smith, president of Headwell Bowling Club, hailed the significant milestone in their history, adding: "It is amazing that we have existed for 100 years, especially when you see clubs that have closed in the area."
