THE scorer of one of the most memorable goals in Dunfermline Athletic's modern history will be on stage for a special event next week.

Barry Nicholson will be one of the guests attending a celebration of the Pars reaching the Scottish Cup final at Hampden two decades ago at the Carnegie Hall next Friday (September 27) - and we have two tickets to give away for the event.

The former midfielder, who is now a coach with Dunfermline's Championship rivals Queen's Park, etched his name into club folklore when he netted in a 3-2 win over Inverness Caledonian Thistle that took them into the final.

In a last four replay - following a 1-1 draw at the national stadium - the Pars led the Highlanders 2-1 at Pittodrie, thanks to goals from Darren Young and Craig Brewster, after Paul Ritchie's opener.

Nicholson, who scored 30 goals in 206 appearances for Dunfermline over five years, then sealed the team's passage to the showpiece with Celtic by skipping past one opponent, nutmegging another, and then stepping inside a third, before passing the ball into the net.

He is the first big name confirmed to attend the 'Celebrating 20 years of the PST - The Road to Hampden 2004', which will take a nostalgic look back at Dunfermline's journey to their first Scottish Cup final since lifting the trophy for a second time, against Heart of Midlothian, in 1968.

The event is being put together by The Pars Supporters Trust, who will also celebrate 20 years since their formation back in 2004.

In addition to players from the squad, which contained stars such as Stevie Crawford, Craig Brewster, Scott Thomson and Andrius Skerla, who scored in the final, the evening will contain archive footage from the BBC of every round of Dunfermline's road to Hampden.

Led by manager, Jimmy Calderwood, and assistant, Jimmy Nicholl, Skerla gave the Pars, captained by Nicholson, a half-time advantage against a star-studded Celtic side.

However, two goals from Henrik Larsson, and a late strike from Stiliyan Petrov, won the match and the trophy for Martin O'Neill's Hoops.

It will be the first time that the players from the 2004 team, whose achievements saw them qualify for the UEFA Cup (now Europa League) for the following season, have been feted in such a way.

The one-off event, which will be hosted by Rob Maclean, who was the BBC's lead football commentator back in 2004, has been put together by the PST, who have been at the forefront of the Save and Buy the Pars campaigns, rallying both the fans and generous members of the public, when the club suffered financial difficulties in 2013.

The organisation has also gone on to fund improvements at KDM Group East End Park, supporting the development of young players and representing the fans voice, which they will continue to do as the club's DAFC Fussball GmbH investment group prepares to sell its stake.
