KNOCKHILL Racing Circuit provided opportunities for disabled drivers interested in racing to learn more about opportunities and technology available last week.

Scotland's national motorsport centre, north of Dunfermline, teamed-up with Team BRIT, one of the world's leading organisations that introduce, cater for and fulfil the ambitions of disabled drivers in the UK, and Disability Motorsport Scotland (DMS), to host a taster day last Wednesday.

Team BRIT, the globe's only competitive team of all-disabled racing drivers, DMS and Knockhill also worked with Spinal Injuries Scotland and Minimax Motorsport for the 'disability motorsport showcase', which also introduced the teams and organisations that can help with entry to the sport.

Almost 20 disabled drivers were invited to the venue to sample two specially adapted competition cars and drive on the famous circuit, which hosts British Touring Car Championship (BTCC) and Bennetts British Superbike Championship racing.

After successfully getting behind the wheel, all were then treated to passenger laps in Team BRITs adapted McLaren GT race car, being driven by professional disabled racers, and were able to meet current Team BRIT and DMS drivers, as well as test out Team BRIT's hand control technology on a top of the range simulator.

Stuart Gray, director of events at Knockhill, said: "We have have been working with Disability Motorsport Scotland for almost a decade helping them to introduce disabled drivers to the thrill of motorsport in Scotland.

"To have Team BRIT here took it to a whole new level with their stunning range of adapted race cars, including their McLaren GT race car. Almost 20 drivers were treated to a drive of the track in their specially adapted BMW One Series or DMS's adapted Audi A3, then everyone had a passenger ride at high speed in the McLaren - amazing.

"Hopefully this will lead to more awareness and participation in the future."

Mike Scudamore, Team BRIT team principal, added: "Through Team BRIT, we’ve proven year on year that having a disability does not need to be a barrier to racing.

"With our technology and expertise, we’ve supported many disabled drivers from rookie level to advanced into racing in the UK and Europe."
