DUNFERMLINE star Rhys Breen scored a wonder goal from his own half in just his second game on loan to Annan Athletic on Saturday.

The centre back found the net with an outrageous effort against Montrose, beating former Athletic goalkeeper, Cammy Gill, to give his team a League One win over the side managed by former Pars hero, Stewart Petrie.

Breen, 24, moved to the Galabankies until January - before the loan window for SPFL clubs outwith the top flight closed at the end of September - having made just four appearances for Dunfermline this term.

Manager, James McPake, was thrilled to see him on the scoresheet - in a game which also saw him handed the captain's armband, and earn the man of the match award - and said it was a difficult decision to send him on loan.

Dunfermline Press:

"I spoke with Rhys right after the game and he was delighted with his goal," he said.

"I’m just delighted he’s getting 90 minutes and starting to feel like himself again. It was a great goal though!

"It was a tough one. He is a great boy, great about the place. He has been frustrated with his body - that’s all it is.

"When we first came in I knew Rhys and he's similar to Dapo (Mebude). You see them when they are younger kids and they really impress. That first season, you can say it was League One - I've had this conversation with so many people about Rhys and several other players - but you had Falkirk in that league, you had Airdrie, two teams that were probably of a quality that would go and easily compete in the Championship.

"Breeny played in a lot of big games for us in League One and then he had his struggles with his hamstring. I think that happened against Raith last year.

"He got that right but he now feels, and we all feel, it wasn't the same Rhys Breen that we saw in the game at Livingston earlier in the season.

"So it was a decision to go and get games between now and January, come back here with 10-15 games to go, and we will wait and see.

"I think, first and foremost, he was excellent in the reserve game before he went, and then you are sitting with the decision, do you still do this or not?

"But I had the conversations with Rhys. We both believed that he had to just play games. I want Annan to do well - Paul McGowan is there, Breeny is there and I like Wullie Gibson - so you hope they do well. From our point of view, I want Rhys Breen getting 90 minutes.

"He still trains with us, he is still great about the place but, for me, it’s just about him feeling good about his body again. He’s starting to get that, he will continue to get it the more games he plays, and that's the reasoning behind that.

"But we'll see how that goes between now and Christmas. Hopefully he gets as many games as he can and and we'll have a look and see if he comes back here match fit and feeling good about his body.

"That's the aim."
