Oakley United 2 Stirling University 1, East of Scotland League, Second Division

PETER GOLDIE has set his sights on achieving a promotion place after Oakley United bounced back from defeat at Coldstream to defeat Stirling University.

The O's, who have reached the last four of the Alex Jack Cup, picked up their first East of Scotland League, Division Two, victory in five matches, since a 1-0 win over Harthill Royal, by avenging the defeat inflicted upon them by the students, with the same scoreline, last month.

The visitors took an early second half lead, but two late goals from Tom Mooney and Bruce McAdam turned the game in Oakley's favour, giving them a victory that leaves them three points off third place - and the final promotion spot.

"After last week's disappointment, result-wise, we had a few boys returning to the squad that missed the Coldstream game," Goldie said.

"Overall, we deserved the three points, but made it hard for ourselves as we squandered some decent opportunities.

"Stirling are a decent side, and knocked the ball about really well at times. They never really threatened our goal, but took the lead by catching us on the counter-attack early in the second half.

"We didn't panic, though, and kept pushing, and got our rewarded when a Tommy Simpson cross found Tom Mooney, from our under-20s, at the back post, who fired high into the net to equalise with two minutes to go.

"We should have been in front straight from the restart as we pressed the Stirling defender into a mistake, and the Stirling goalkeeper made two great saves from Tom Mooney and Ryan Cowie on the follow-up.

"We managed to get the winner in the final minute when the referee blew for a foul on Lee Dawson, bringing the play back just as Cai MacDonald was about to head the ball into the goal from Ryan Cowie's cross.

"Luckily, we scored from the resulting free-kick, with Ryan Cowie crossing to find Bruce McAdam at the back post. Bruce's diving header gave the goalkeeper no chance, and ensured we took the three points.

"It's not good for the heart, to be honest, and the boys showed character again coming from behind to win the game, keeping our unbeaten home record going.

"The league is tight and our objective is to finish in the promotion spots so, hopefully, we can get another win this weekend to keep pushing ourselves up the table."

Saturday's fixtures (kick-offs 2.30pm): East of Scotland League, First Division: Crossgates Primrose v Kinnoull, Lochore Welfare v Inverkeithing Hillfield Swifts. Second Division: Peebles Rovers v Oakley United.
