A MEMBER of an aquatics club that trains in West Fife has recently celebrated winning a medal at a national event.

Faith Williamson, who competes with Fife Artistic Swimming Club, won a bronze medal in the 12 years and under category at the Scottish Artistic Swimming Figures Competition in Nairn.

The 12-year-old, who trains with the club twice a week, performed four figures in front of a panel of judges from across the country, and her best efforts were rewarded when she secured a place on the podium.

Lesley Bloomer, the club's chair, commented: "We are very proud of Faith.

"She's worked so hard on these technical figures and it was great to see her being rewarded with third place."

Faith's success comes after Fife Artistic Swimming Club's senior team picked up a gold medal at the Scottish Artistic Swimming Club Championships during the summer.

Held at Carnegie Leisure Centre, where the club train on a Monday, with Kirkcaldy Leisure Centre hosting them on a Thursday, they claimed top spot in the last, and biggest, event of the competition, the Combination Team.

They saw off stiff competition from Clydebank, who placed second, and Edinburgh, who were third, with Fife's entertaining and fast-paced routine swum to Queen's 'Another One Bites The Dust', and choreographed and coached by senior swimmers, Zoe Affleck and Katie-Anne Angel.

There was also a fifth place for the club's junior team, and Lesley said: "We are so proud of both our teams.

"The senior team swam brilliantly but not in our wildest dreams did we think we’d take gold – but they delivered it in amazing style. Our junior team swam really well, especially as most of the team have not competed in a Scottish competition before. They’ve gained great experience which will help them in years to come.

"What makes the senior win all the more amazing is that it is the first team routine that two of our older swimmers, Zoe Affleck and Katie-Anne Angel, have choreographed. They’re very talented and as well as working out the routine, they coached the team very effectively.

"They, together with Eva Williamson, who worked superbly with our junior team, are fantastic additions to our strong and dedicated poolside team."

Fife Artistic Swimming Club have swimmers aged from eight to 18, as well as the only adult section in Scotland.
