A Dunfermline teenager has been picked to join team GB at the World University Championship Games in Italy.

18-year-old ice hockey player Jordan Troup will play at the FISU world games, which are held every 2 years.

In order to travel to Italy, she had to raise £2600  which she achieved by working as a referee and conducting a Go Fund Me campaign.

Proud mother Michelle Troup said: It’s absolutely phenomenal. To be the first person in Fife college to make it, with the calibre of players that come from all over the UK and even America, it’s outstanding.”

Jordan, who was a figure skater before falling in love with ice hockey, said: “It was one time when I finished one of my private sessions that the hockey players were going on and I immediately turned to my mum and said ‘I want to do that.’

“She managed to find me this free ‘learn to play’ thing at Murrayfield. I think it was the first and last one of its kind, so I’ve no idea how I managed to get so lucky at that exact time.

“I went off the session and immediately knew it was something I liked and wanted to continue.”

A student of sound engineering, Jordan manages to juggle her education with her passion for hockey.

She said: “A lot of it clashes with my college but I think a lot of my lecturers are understanding. I told them before and they said I couldn’t get out of class to play, but when I showed them proof that I’d got in the team they were all ok with it.

“I’m quite grateful because it doesn’t really get in the way of my social life. I go down to England and stuff for training and trials, and there’s so many girls who I don’t know that I can mix with.”
