Dunfermline midfielder Joe Chalmers believes that playing with high energy provides the platform for the team to produce their best football.

The 30-year-old felt the intensity to their play helped to ensure they progressed to the SPFL Trust Trophy semi-finals with a dominant win over League One Alloa Athletic on Tuesday night.

Lewis McCann scored the game's only goal, but the Pars created, and didn't take, a host of opportunities to give the scoreline a fairer reflection of their dominance.

Chalmers, though, was encouraged by the chances they made, and hopes that they can take it into this Saturday's Championship clash with Airdrieonians.

Dunfermline Press:

"I'm obviously delighted to get to the semi-final," he said post-match.

"It's a cup we want to try and go all the way in, so we're delighted to get there, but, obviously, we could have made the night a lot more comfortable for ourselves.

"The game should have been out of sight with the chances that we had and stuff like that and, while it's only 1-0, the other team's always going to have a wee spell in the game. It becomes a wee bit edgy, obviously, with the form that we're in, that we just want to see it out.

"I thought we did see it out pretty comfortably but, obviously, the frustration from the night is not taking the chances, but I'm glad we're creating them.

"I think the main thing with our team, we play our best football and we create our best, is when we keep the high energy, and we keep the tempo of the game up, because we've got a fat group of boys that can all get about the pitch and run.

"So, I think when we keep that energy high, and the ball's out of play, and we can try and get it back in quick, and we keep the teams on the back foot and stuff like that, I think that's when we're at our best.

"I thought we done that for a lot of that game tonight. That's how a lot of our chances come, so hopefully we just need to start taking them better."

When he was asked if it felt, whilst on the pitch, like Athletic were in control of the match, Chalmers replied: "Aye, I thought first half especially, and then maybe the start of the second half, they maybe had a wee ten minutes.

"They never really created anything or put us under pressure, but they've got good players, Alloa. They've got some clever players and tidy players, so they're always going to be a threat, but I thought we managed that well and then again, we got on top.

"Obviously, the subs coming on gave us more energy as well. They created more chances and as it went on, you're like, come on, just give us something so we could see it out.

"We're not making things easy for ourselves, and that's kind of been happening a lot this season.

"Alloa again, they're top of the league, they've got confidence. It was going to be a hard game, so I'm glad we're going to the semi-finals."
