A Fife Paralympic champion's incredible year could see him add another accolade to his growing collection next week.

Ben Sandilands will rub shoulders with some of Scotland's most renowned stars after being put forward for a prize at the Scottish Sports Awards 2024.

The 21-year-old has been shortlisted for 'Moment of the Year', which is voted for by members of the public, after his memorable T20 1500 metres win at his first Paralympic Games.

Fife AC athlete Ben, who is a team-mate of Dunfermline track star Owen Miller, who won the same event at the delayed Tokyo Games of 2021, raced to glory in a new world record time of three minutes and 45.50 seconds.

That achievement saw him nominated for Para Athlete of the Year at the scottishathletics and jogscotland 4J Studios Annual Awards last month, a prize he was jointly awarded alongside wheelchair racer, Samantha Kinghorn, who won one gold and four gold medals in Paris.

Following that success, his proud mum, Claire, said: "Ben was absolutely delighted to be asked to present the Janice Eaglesham MBE Para Development Club of the Year Award (to Corstorphine AAC), pick up his coach Steve Doig's joint award for Para Athlete Performance Coach of the Year, and be awarded the Para Athlete of the Year jointly with Sammi.

Ben's super run to cross the line first in Paris is one of eight stand-out moments in contention for the award.

The Kirkcaldy-born star, who is part of a training group led by Steve at Pitreavie Athletics Centre, is up against Sir Andy Murray, and his epic tennis doubles comeback at the Paris Olympic games, and golfer Bob MacIntyre, who claimed the Scottish Open title.

Other nominees include wheelchair tennis player Gordon Reid OBE, who claimed Paralympic gold with Alfie Hewett, after winning silver in both 2016 and 2021; Josh Kerr, who won 2024 World Athletics Indoor Championships 3,000m gold in Glasgow; the Glasgow Warriors rugby team, who won the BKT United Rugby Championship; Jasmin Paris MBE, who completed the 100-mile Barkley Marathons; and Scott Brash MBE, who won Olympic team showjumping gold.

Hosted by sportscotland and Team Scotland, the Scottish Sports Awards - in which Steve Doig was named Coach of the Year in 2023 - celebrates the success of individuals, schools, clubs and teams from across the whole of Scottish sport.

Prizes in 13 categories will be presented on the night, whilst Dame Katherine Grainger DBE, Colin Montgomerie OBE and Jim Anderson OBE will be inducted into the Scottish Sports Hall of Fame.

The event takes place at the Glasgow Science Centre and IMAX on Wednesday December 4.
