Dunfermline boss James McPake believes that "goals are going to come" for Dapo Mebude after he opened his account for the club on Saturday.

The former Scotland under-21 international was on hand to give the Pars the lead in their Scottish Cup third round win at Edinburgh City on Saturday, notching his first goal in more than three years.

Mebude, who came through Rangers' youth system before leaving for Watford in the summer of 2021, last found the net in September of that year whilst on loan at AFC Wimbledon.

His first in an Athletic shirt came in his 10th appearance for the club since signing in October, having been without a club since leaving Belgian side, KV Oostende, in the summer.

Dunfermline Press:

Until he made his Dunfermline debut, as a substitute in a draw at Airdrieonians, Mebude hadn't played a competitive match since being involved in a life-threatening car accident in January.

When asked if the attacker was getting to where he wanted him to be, McPake said: "In terms of physically, yes.

"We all know the story. We go over it every time we speak about him, but he's had to work really hard, not just to get back playing football, but to get healthy in his self. He's now fit, he's strong.

"He's been annoyed at himself I think that that goal's not been coming, and sometimes you get like that. You try a wee bit harder and, to be fair, it's been annoying me because, every week, I'm saying to him, this will be your week, you're going to get your goal now, and it's not happened.

"To get it so early on, I was delighted for him, and hopefully, now he just kicks on and relaxes.

"When a striker plays a game, or trains, that's what they care about, is scoring goals.

"There's a lot more to Dapo's game than scoring goals. That's why, even when he's not scoring, he's really effective at what he does.

"He's brave as they come, not just for what he came through, but the way he plays and the way he puts himself about in the game. He's talented as well, so the goals are going to come. It's just about that belief for him now that he's got that.

"He had a couple of other wee chances. I think it's his header that the goalkeeper saves for Josh Cooper's rebound.

"Again, on another day, if it's not a great save from the goalkeeper, he's walking away with two.

"Selfishly for him, or me being selfish on my side of it, I'm desperate for him to get as many goals as he can, just for himself, because he's a great kid to work with.

"Now that that's the first one in, I'm sure that he'll relax and more goals will come, but, regardless, he's still a massive threat when the goals aren't there."
